There are really only 2 big satellite Internet brands. Wild Blue Satellite
Internet and Hughes Net Satellite Internet.
Currently, we are promoting Wild Blue dish internet over Hughes Net dish internet
simply because of price per month. If you keep your satellite internet for
at least a year, Wild Blue satellite internet is cheaper.
Both Wild Blue and Hughes Net satellite internet services are superb and you should
be 100% satisfied with either for your internet needs.
Background
Home/Office
Satellite Internet via dish was first established in the mid 90's. DirecPC
was the first satellite internet service and allowed
anyone, anywhere in North America to access the Internet. Originally a dial up account was
needed to send data, and satellite dish was used to receive data. This
method of Dish & Phone line is NOT used any more. No phone line is
needed.
Eventually Starband and Direcway (formally DirecPC)
released two-way dish internet systems.
These satellite internet systems used a USB connection to connect the internet with a PC. These systems provided
excellent download
speeds via the dish, but initially upload speeds were not much faster then older dial up
connections. Networking these system
was painful as they used USB instead of the normal methods of ethernet/computer
networking.
Satellite Internet has evolved, and is still evolving. Satellite Internet
Modems are now the norm and have built in networking ability. They have built-in DHCP
and can be combined with a hub/switch/router/wifi, which allows multiple
people to use the internet securely.
HughesNet
In 2005 Direcway became HughesNet Satellite Internet. HugesNet has grown
over the last few years to establish themselves as co-leader in the residential and
SOHO satellite Internet provider market.
Today HughesNet uses advanced DVB compression technologies and a new network operations
center to provide even faster satellite internet service to consumers and SOHO's
and business customers. HughesNet uses several dish sizes and transmit radios to
provide a multi-tier service platform. Prices start at $59.99 a month (as of February,
2007) for a residential class system.
WildBlue
In 2005, WildBlue entered the scene with the latest in Satellite Broadband
Technology, Ka-band (19-30 GHz). Ka-band provides more precise spot beam control
and allows the use of smaller dishes. During 2006 Wild blue experienced rapid
growth into the residential market. Wildblue internet service is provided via
the Anik F2 satellite.
